I HAD ALWAYS faced Enoch on the mount, but this time, I wasn’t sure that was the best way to go about this. I had seen horses mount other horses, and I thought—if Enoch was wild and out of his head, pure instinct—then I should mimic that sort of posture.

So, with Janet’s help, I was able to secure myself on the mount bent over, legs spread, elevated into the air at a level that seemed to be the right height for Enoch. I was able to keep my hands free, and after Janet left, I spent all my time reaching back and rubbing as much grease into myself as I could.

I was terrified of this.

It was going to be brutal, and he wasn’t going to be easy with me at all, and I didn’t want to do it.

Perhaps I should have waited to see if he returned to himself, but I was frightened that if I waited, he would only grow more wild and out of control and that this would still be necessary, only that it would be worse.

I supposed I could have… well, if my husband was essentially a rabid animal, then he could be… put down? If centaurs lived forever, could they be killed?

I didn’t want that.

Being a centaur’s widow did not appeal to me.

No, I wanted him alive. I wanted that stupid dinner with the duke and duchess. I wanted…

I wanted him back.

If this was the way I got him back, so be it.

I heard my husband and Mr. Higgins approaching far before I could see them. There were all manner of loud huffs and whinnies and maddened cries. When they did come into sight, my husband was bound and muzzled, his arms tied tightly behind his back and some sort of contraption over his mouth that was a horrible version of the bridle he’d put on me. How he was making such noises through that thing, I could not even understand! His legs could move but they were chained, so he could not move them too quickly.

When he saw me, he started for the mount, but the chains caught him and he staggered and nearly fell down.

Mr. Higgins spoke to him in a calm and commanding voice, keeping his gaze only on my husband, never even looking at the mount. He pulled on the chains, keeping Enoch from moving too quickly.

I shivered, feeling debased and disgusted.

Was this what it had all come to?

I was being taken by an animal in the end.

Tears formed in my eyes, and I took several shaking breaths.

Don’t think about it, I told myself. He is not an animal. He is your husband. You must give him back his humanity, and you must get through this.

Enoch strained for the mount, and Mr. Higgins kept him moving slowly, but eventually they got there.

“He needs to be unchained to get his hooves up,” I said.

Mr. Higgins wouldn’t look at me. “But what if he kicks you?”

“He can’t mount otherwise,” I said.

Mr. Higgins seemed to be considering this.
